Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, who himself, began his journey in the United States as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. His autobiography, Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon, is both riveting and inspirational, and we anticipate hearing from him!

2014 Annual MELLFIN Scholarship

The MELLFIN Scholarship is an annual scholarship award for a current or former ESOL student in Maryland who is currently a senior in high school, and has demonstrated a commitment to attend college. MELLFIN is facilitating this scholarship award to recognize excellence and support students in realizing their college aspirations.The total award for the student recipient will be $1,000 to support associated costs to attend college.
Eligible student applicants must:
• currently be enrolled and classified as a senior in Maryland Public Schools
• currently be in an ESOL program or have exited the ESOL program within the past three (3) years
• currently have a GPA of 3.0 or better
• be on track to graduate in Spring 2014
To apply students must complete the application form and submit it along with an official school transcript and two reference forms. Completed nomination packets must be postmarked by March 10, 2014, and mailed to:

Accepting Nominations for the 2014 ELL Family Engagement Award
The MELLFIN ELL Family Engagement Award is an annual award for a program whose exemplary efforts to engage English language learner (ELL) families have made significant impacts in the lives of ELL youth and families. MELLFIN created the award to highlight model programs that demonstrate best practices for ELL family engagement and to encourage other groups to implement similar initiatives. Eligible programs should be hosted by staff from school systems, community organizations, and/or businesses within the state of Maryland. Completed nomination forms should be submitted by March 14, 2014 to Monica Lopez.
